Cultural attractions of Mérida Yucatán

1.- Tour along Paseo de Montejo Avenue.

The Paseo de Montejo is the longest and most emblematic avenue in the city, its architecture is inspired by French boulevards. Along this avenue you will find historical monuments, colonial mansions, hotels, museums, restaurants, boutiques, shops, etc. You can also rent a buggy car (typical horse-drawn carriage, currently the electric carriage service already exists). This is offered from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Calle 61, next to the Cathedral.

2. Visit the Museo del Mundo Maya.

This is another activity of the “What to do in Mérida Yucatán”. This museum consists of four permanent exhibition rooms and an audiovisual room where documentaries about the history of Yucatán are shown. . More than 1,160 objects are exhibited: textiles, religious elements, engravings, vessels and ornaments – reflecting the daily life of the Mayans – books, historical documents and art from the colonial era. Open from Wednesday to Monday from 8:00 am to 5 pm, and on Saturdays at 8 pm you can witness the impressive light and sound show.

3.- The Centenario Zoo.

From the moment you enter, you can start enjoying delicious ice creams and popsicles or some snacks. Right in this area there is a small locomotive where you can take photos with family or friends. Nearby is another icon of the park, the Centennial Tree planted in 1910 that commemorates the independence of Mexico. The zoo has a variety of animals including: giraffes, camels, hippos, coatis, bears, deer, zebras, tigers, lions and monkeys.

4.- The José Peón Contreras theater.

It is one of the most important theaters in the city. It was inaugurated on December 21, 1908. It was designed by the architects Pío Piacentini, Enrico Deserti and Fernando Cenicola and was re-inaugurated on December 13, 1981. The work with which the building premiered was “A Night of Music and Literature ”. Currently, the theater is home to the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra, in addition to hosting hundreds of national and international events: Theater, opera, music, dance, variety shows, children’s shows, festivals and conferences.

5. Visit the cantina tour of downtown Mérida.
